StepWays — Hiking mobile app

In short: StepWays opens hiking trails for you. You pay for them in stages. Buying a trail opens one walk: if you walk the same trail again later, that is a new purchase. On the other hand, the stages you keep in your wallet stay valid for life. And the mountain is still dangerous: the app guides you, it does not decide for you.

1. Who publishes StepWays

StepWays is a hiking mobile app published by Only1Cent. It is distributed on Google Play and on the App Store.

For any question about these terms: contact@only1cent.com.

Using the app constitutes acceptance of these terms and of the privacy policy.

2. What the app does

StepWays gives you access to hiking trails: the map, the track, the breakdown into stages, the useful places along the route, the weather and the tracking of your progress.

Maps and tracks work offline. In the mountains you have no network: that is what the app is built for.

The app publishes no user content. You write nothing in it that others can read.

3. Your account and your recovery code

On first use, the app opens an anonymous account for you. No name, no email address, no password.

The app gives you a recovery code. Write it down and keep it. It is what lets you find your account, your stages and your progress again on another phone or after a reinstall.

We do not have that code. It is generated on your phone and is never sent to us. If you lose it, we cannot give your account back: the app does not know who you are. That is the price of anonymity, and it is better to know it before you set off. Write it down somewhere other than the phone.

4. What you buy

The unit of the whole model is the stage. A trail is paid for in stages, not as a package.

Three doors, as you prefer:

All payments go through Google Play or the App Store. We receive no payment card data.

5. Buying a trail buys one walk

This is the most important rule on this page. We would rather write it plainly than let you discover it.

When you pay for the stages of a trail, you open one walk: the one you are about to do.

If you walk the same trail again later, that is a new purchase. That second walk is a separate journey from the first: it has its own progress, its own track, its own logbook. It does not resume the previous one, and it does not erase it.

So here is what we are not selling you: neither lifetime access nor open-ended access. A trail you have opened once does not stay open indefinitely.

6. Your banked stages are valid for life

This is the other side of the previous rule, and it works in your favour.

The stages you have bought in a pack, or that your subscription has credited to you, and that you have not yet spent, stay in your wallet with no time limit. That is to say:

Once spent on a trail, a stage has done its job: it has opened one walk, and the rule in section 5 applies.

7. The subscription

The subscription costs €2 per month and gives two things, not one:

Term and cancellation

The subscription is monthly and renews automatically until you stop it.

You stop it whenever you want, from your Google Play account or your Apple account. That is the only place where it stops: managing the subscription belongs to the store, not to us.

It stays active until the end of the month already paid for. After that, advertising comes back and the monthly stages stop being credited. The stages already banked remain yours.

8. Advertising

The app is partly funded by advertising. Three formats, and no others:

Never during the hike. While you are walking, no advertising is shown, in any format. The screen belongs to you and to the trail. That is a rule, not a setting.

Advertising is also not shown during the 24 hours opened by a rewarded video, nor while your subscription is active. If you have bought a trail, advertising disappears on that trail.

The choice about personalised advertising is asked separately, and you can reopen it at any time in the settings. If you refuse it, advertising is still shown but is no longer targeted. The details are in the privacy policy.

9. The mountain is dangerous, and you remain responsible

This is the most serious section on the page. Read it once, in full.

StepWays is not a mountain guide. The app replaces neither a map, nor a compass, nor experience, nor your own judgement.

You alone decide to set off, to carry on or to turn back. You are responsible for your equipment, your physical condition, your route and your reading of the weather.

And you need to know what can go wrong:

Never set off without a paper map, and tell someone where you are going. The app does not call the emergency services for you. In an emergency in Europe, call 112.

We cannot be held liable for an accident, an injury, a loss or any damage occurring during a hike, nor for the decisions you make in the field.

10. What belongs to us, and what does not

What is ours. The app, its texts, our stage descriptions, our illustrations and the way we cut a trail into stages are protected and belong to Only1Cent. You may not extract them, republish them, resell them, or include them in another service.

The tracks are not ours. The tracks and the base maps come from OpenStreetMap and belong to its contributors. They are published under the ODbL 1.0 licence — Open Database License: "© OpenStreetMap contributors". That licence lets anyone, us and you alike, reuse them, including commercially, on two conditions: credit the source, and release under the same licence any derived database you publish. We claim no rights over these tracks, and we forbid you nothing that the ODbL allows you.

The routes are not ours either. A trail was composed, waymarked and maintained by someone: a nature park, a federation, an association, a local authority. The route belongs to whoever composed it, and its name to whoever registered it. When we name a trail, it is to tell you which one we mean. It is neither a trademark of ours nor a permission we have obtained — unless that trail's page says so expressly.

What you produce stays yours. Your photos, your logbook, your own tracks: we take no rights over them.

11. Refunds and right of withdrawal

Your purchases are collected by Apple and by Google, not by us. Refunds therefore follow the rules of the store where you paid, and that is where they must be requested.

You have a 14-day right of withdrawal on digital content. That right ends as soon as you start using the content you bought: opening a trail is starting.

If something is wrong, write to us first: contact@only1cent.com. A problem is often settled better directly.

12. Updates

We keep developing the app. An update may add, change or remove a feature.

For the app to keep working properly, you need to have updated it and to have an operating system that is still supported.

We may also change these terms. If the change is significant, the new version is published on this page before it takes effect, and the date at the top of the page changes. Continuing to use the app after that date constitutes acceptance.

13. Your personal data

What stays on your phone, what is sent to our servers, the permissions the app asks for, your consents and your rights: it is all described in the StepWays privacy policy.

The essentials: the app creates no named account, and your medical card never leaves your device.

14. Governing law

These terms are governed by French law.

In the event of disagreement, let us first look for an amicable solution: write to contact@only1cent.com. Failing agreement, the French courts have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, you keep the right to bring proceedings before the court of your place of residence in the European Union.

15. Contact

We undertake to answer any request within 30 days.
